History
The Department of French Language and Culture was established in 1964; the Graduate Institute of French Language and Culture was established in 1984. Between them, the Department and the Graduate Institute have produced over 2,500 graduates; many of these alumni have gone on to have outstanding careers in public administration, education or industry, setting a fine example for new generations of students to follow. The current Director of both the Department of French Language and Culture and the Graduate Institute of French Language and Culture is Professor Jean-Yves Heurtebise.

In July 1996, Father Zsoldos and Department alumnus Mr. Chiu Ta-Huan were both awarded the title of Officier des Palmes Académiques by the Prime Minister of France, and Father Riou was awarded the title of Chevalier des Palmes Académiques by the French President. In July 1998, Professor Chou Kung-Hsin was awarded the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of the highest awards of its kind in France. In September that same year, Professor Hong Teng-Yueh was awarded the title of Chevalier des Palmes Académiques, and Department alumnus Li Ching-Ching was awarded the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
       
From 1996 to 1999, Professor Hong Teng-Yueh served as the first Chairperson of the Association des Professeurs Français de Taiwan. In June 2008, Professor Huang Sheue-Shya was elected to serve as the Association’s new Chairperson, and Professors Hong Teng-Yueh, Huang Meng-Lan, Yang Kuang-Jane and Shen Chung-Heng were elected to serve as Directors; In June 2020, Professor Eric DE PAYEN was elected to serve as the Association’s new Chairperson, Professors Huang Meng-Lan and Shen Chung-Heng were elected to serve as Directors, and Professor Julie BOHEC was elected to serve as Supervisor; In June 2023, Professor Eric DE PAYEN was elected to serve as the Association’s new Chairperson, for a term of three years. The Association is dedicated to raising the educational, academic and cultural status and influence of the French language in Taiwan.
