 Vision & Objectives

The Department of French Language and Culture and the Graduate Institute of French Language and Culture have inherited a tradition of education oriented towards truth, goodness, beauty, and the divine. Students and faculty members work together as a community; the goal is to educate the whole person, cultivating French language specialists whose actions reflect a humanistic spirit.

The Department and Graduate Institute have three main objectives:
  • To cultivate French language specialists who are proactive learners capable of critical thinking and possess a second area of expertise.
  • To encourage students to develop an international mindset and to strengthen their cross-cultural communication capabilities.
  • To strengthen the education of the whole person, using service-learning to cultivate creative, competitive human talent.

1.  The Department of French Language and Culture
To help students strengthen their skills and competitiveness, we encourage them to take courses in other subjects, or to take a double major. Students begin preparing for this in the second half of their freshman year. Students who wish to study at the Bordeaux Management School in France during their senior year are required to complete the business courses provided by Fu Jen Catholic University's College of Management in their sophomore year.

Every year, the Department works actively to secure a quota from the University to enable students who are interested in teaching French as a career to secure teacher training. The Department has also joined forces with the Department of Italian Language and Literature to organize a Chinese-language teacher training course.

The Department has also worked actively to develop programs for academic collaboration and exchange with leading French universities and institutes.

  • Students who are interested in commerce and business administration can undertake a year of study at Ecole de Management de Bordeaux. Every year, two places are reserved for senior year students. Students only have to pay the same tuition fees that they would pay for the same year at Fu Jen Catholic University for the same year without having to pay double tuition fees.
  • Students whose interests lie more in language and the humanities can undertake a year of study at the language center of Aix-Marseille Université. Freshman, sophomore and junior-year students are all eligible to apply. Before arriving in France, students need to pay tuition fees to both Fu Jen Catholic University and the language center.

Credits obtained at the Ecole de Management de Bordeaux or at Aix-Marseille Université can be offset against the credits required by Fu Jen Catholic University.

2.  The Graduate Institute of French Language and Culture (Master's Program)
The Graduate Institute of French Language and Culture seeks to keep pace with the changing times, while at the same time ensuring that students’ needs are met. The Graduate Institute’s Master’s Program is designed to combine theoretical and practical aspects. The Program is intended to cultivate:
(1) Literary and cultural talent that can contribute to cultural exchange between Taiwan and Continental Europe.
(2) Translation talent, to give Taiwan access to a wider range of information from overseas.
(3) French language teaching talent, to supply French teachers for the second foreign language requirement in junior and senior high schools. To help students complete their studies and secure their MA within the four years allowed, the Graduate School has established a Master’s Thesis Plan Review Committee, and has formulated regulations governing the requirements for the awarding of the MA degree, which include a detailed explanation of how students should go about preparing for and writing their Master’s thesis.

As regards opportunities for academic exchange, every year Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris III) accept at least two students from the Graduate School to take MA courses in applied foreign languages, French literature and French language teaching; Students only have to pay the same tuition fees as charged at Fu Jen Catholic University for the same year without having to pay double tuition fees. The Graduate School is also taking part in an international collaboration program with Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris III) covering both the Master 1 and Master 2 (thesis) components of the MA program; credits obtained in France can be set off against the credits required by Fu Jen Catholic University. Recently, Fu Jen Catholic University has established a new “sister university” relationship with Université Lumière Lyon II.
